It is not enough to know the “what” and the “why” you should be street smart, it is expedient to know the how and that is what this article is all about.
Google defines street smart as “the experience and knowledge necessary to deal with the potential difficulties or dangers of life in an urban environment.”
I think I can stop this article here, to be sincere.
We have a clear answer to what we want but unfortunately one does not stop writing a blog post on just two lines… lol!
Against all odds, I want to tell you “what and why” you need to be street smart.
We can start by proving wrong the belief that street smart is for a set of illiterates and unintelligent people.
This is a false belief or assertion that society has about being street smart.
Your favourite politician, entrepreneur, musician etc understands that life is beyond being book smart, they know they have to speak the language of the street. What then is the street? It is where you live, that is the simple answer.
Branding yourself “streetwise” is one of the ways of tapping or exploring the market. If you don’t have an understanding of a system, then ignorant is not an excuse
Street Smart, Street Smart… What Does it Mean?
It simply means you have situational experience and knowledge about the happenings in your environment.
We can further say; you understand the modus operandi and modus vivendi of what is happening, that is to say, you’re not blind to the things happening around you.
We can also say being street smart is having common sense, you might agree with me that common sense is no longer common.
It does not depict that you live in fear, NO! it keeps you aware that things might go wrong and helps you with the best judgement on how to solve it and move ahead.

Nothing makes you unpredictable like being street smart, you can have a fast assessment of the situation around you even before it happens and you can make a quick and smart decision before it happens. You can change the things you have initially plan to do.
This is where street smart comes handy.
Does this mean be book smart is not it? NO! For some book smart is what they need.
Book smart is said to be academically or exam sound.
Have you found yourself in an environment where people say “I can’t wait to see/face the real world” these are words we hear right inside the school? We can further describe book smart as someone who is keen on obeying/keeping the rules.
Maybe you’ve started your business or you hope to start a business you need to be street smart or you’re not smart at all, your degree notwithstanding.
Book smart and street smart, the good thing is both words have one word in common ‘smart’. Does the word smart sound like something bad to you?
